New York Harbor

The pricing hub for East Coast gasoline and diesel. We arrange storage, blending, barge movements and inspection across the New Jersey side of New York Harbor.

Product tanks and barge docks along an industrial waterway with a city skyline in the distance

New York Harbor is where much of the US East Coast gets its gasoline and diesel. NYMEX RBOB gasoline and NY Harbor ULSD futures are delivered here, so terminals along the Kill Van Kull, Arthur Kill and Newark Bay set reference prices for the whole Northeast.

Barrels arrive by the Colonial and Buckeye pipeline systems, by tanker from Europe and from local refining at Bayway in Linden, then move on by barge, pipeline and truck. We source tankage in this cluster, schedule barge and pipeline movements, arrange in-tank blending and appoint independent inspectors at every transfer.

The delivery area behind the futures

The NYMEX rulebook defines the New York Harbor delivery area to include the Kill Van Kull, Arthur Kill, Newark Bay and the Raritan River east of the Garden State Parkway bridge. A delivering facility must be approved by the exchange, offer at least 20 feet of draft at mean low water and be able to load barges.

Large terminals in Bayonne and Carteret connect to the Colonial and Buckeye systems, which means product can arrive by pipeline from the Gulf Coast and leave by barge to Long Island, Connecticut and upstate New York.

What we arrange in the harbor

Most harbor business moves in barge-sized parcels, and quality must meet the specification of the destination market. We plan the storage and the movements around those parcels.

  • Tankage for gasoline, blendstocks, ULSD, heating oil and biodiesel
  • Gasoline blending to RBOB and conventional specifications
  • Barge scheduling within the harbor and to Northeast terminals
  • Independent inspection and sampling at each custody transfer
  • Tracking from Gulf Coast pipeline injection or European load port

Frequently asked questions

Which terminals can deliver against NYMEX RBOB and ULSD?

Only facilities approved by the exchange inside the defined New York Harbor area, with at least 20 feet of draft at mean low water and barge loading capability.

How deep are the harbor channels?

The main channels were deepened to 50 feet in 2016. The Arthur Kill reach is 41 feet, and individual berths vary, for example 47 feet at IMTT Bayonne and 37 feet at Kinder Morgan Carteret.

What happened to the Northeast Gasoline Supply Reserve?

The one-million-barrel federal reserve, most of it held in New York Harbor, was sold and closed in 2024.
