Integrity & Fraud Prevention

Fraudsters put real terminal names on fake TSRs, ATVs and dip-test authorizations to extract fees from buyers. Here is the pattern, our rules, and how to check any document in our name.

Illustration of a verified tank storage receipt

Bulk petroleum attracts a well-organized form of advance-fee fraud. A seller offers product said to be sitting in storage at a real terminal, often at a discount, and backs the offer with documents that look like terminal paperwork. The buyer is then asked to pay something before the product can be seen: a storage fee, an inspection fee, a document release fee. The product does not exist, or does not belong to the seller.

Our name, address and logo can be copied like anyone else's. What cannot be copied is our process. This page sets out the warning signs, what CorEnergy always does and never does, and how to verify a document before you act on it. If anything about a deal that uses our name feels wrong, checking with us first costs nothing.

How the fraud works

The pattern is consistent. A seller or "mandate" offers a large volume of diesel, jet fuel or crude "in tank" at a named terminal. The buyer receives a Tank Storage Receipt (TSR), an Authority to Verify (ATV) or a Dip Test Authorization (DTA), with a procedure called "dip and pay": inspect the tank, then pay for the product. Before the dip can happen, the buyer is asked to pay the "terminal" for injection, storage, an inspection slot or the release of documents.

Variations include demands for an MT103 or proof of funds before any contract is signed, "proof of product" packages built from altered genuine documents, and requests to pay a "tank farm" account that belongs to someone else. Messages often come from look-alike domains or free webmail addresses, signed with the names of real or invented terminal staff.

  • Documents offered before KYC, a signed contract or any meeting
  • Any fee to inspect, dip, inject, legalize or release documents
  • Pressure to pay quickly, often against a discount that is about to expire
  • Bank details that differ from the contract, or that change by email
  • An email address that does not end exactly in @corenergylogistics.com
  • A demand for an MT103, proof of funds or bank comfort letter before a contract exists
  • Product said to be in a tank with no storage agreement behind it

What CorEnergy always does

We verify every counterparty before any commercial or operational access: company registration, beneficial ownership, directors, sanctions screening and, where relevant, bank and trade references. Buyer-portal credentials are issued only after that KYC is complete. Storage receipts go only to verified customers under a signed Tank Storage Agreement, and title to stock we hold moves only on the written instruction of the verified depositor.

  • KYC before portal access, quotes on specific tankage or any document
  • Receipts only to verified customers under a signed Tank Storage Agreement
  • Payments only to the bank account named in the signed contract
  • Bank details confirmed by phone on +1 252 633 7061, the number on this website, before the first payment and after any change
  • Email only from addresses ending exactly in @corenergylogistics.com

What CorEnergy never does

Some requests never come from CorEnergy. If one reaches you in our name, treat it as fraud, whoever appears to have sent it and however genuine the letterhead looks. Fraudsters copy logos, addresses, registration numbers and signatures from public sources and from documents used in earlier scams. The rules below do not change for urgent deals, large volumes or introductions from a trusted intermediary.

  • We never charge a fee to inspect, dip or reserve a tank without a signed Tank Storage Agreement
  • We never charge a fee to issue or release a TSR, ATV, DTA or any other document
  • We never send storage documents to parties who have not passed our KYC
  • We never ask for an MT103, proof of funds or a bank letter to "unlock" a deal
  • We never change bank details by email or ask you to pay a third party
  • We never confirm another party's stock to you without that party's written authorization

Look-alike domains and email addresses

Our website is corenergylogistics.com and our email addresses end in @corenergylogistics.com. Fraudsters register domains that differ by one character, add a hyphen or a word such as "terminal" or "usa", or use another ending such as .co, .net or .us. They also set the display name of a free webmail account to read "CorEnergy Logistics".

Read the full address, not the display name, and type our address yourself rather than pressing reply. A reply-to address that differs from the sender, a request to move the conversation to a messaging app, or a phone number that is not shown on this website are all reasons to stop and verify.

If you have already paid

Contact your bank at once and ask it to recall the payment; speed matters. Keep every email, document and payment record. In the US, report the fraud to the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center at ic3.gov; elsewhere, report it to your national police or fraud reporting service. Send us a copy at info@corenergylogistics.com so we can record the misuse of our name and support any investigation.

How it works

  1. 1Stop before you pay

Do not pay, sign or forward anything until the document is verified. A genuine transaction will still be there after a phone call.

  2. 2Check the sender

Confirm the email address ends exactly in @corenergylogistics.com and did not come from free webmail or a look-alike domain.

  3. 3Sign in to the portal

Verified buyers can sign in to the Buyer / Receipt-Holder Portal. A genuine allocation in your name appears there. If it does not, the document is not ours.

  4. 4Contact us directly

Call +1 252 633 7061 or email info@corenergylogistics.com, typing the details yourself. Attach the document and say how it reached you.

  5. 5Get our answer in writing

We confirm in writing whether the document is genuine. If it is not, we record it and, with your agreement, pass the details to the authorities.

Frequently asked questions

Can CorEnergy confirm that a seller has product in your tanks?

Only to a verified party, and only with the written authorization of our storage customer. We do not confirm stock positions to anyone who has not passed our KYC, and we never charge for a confirmation. If a seller cannot arrange that, treat the offer with caution.

A seller says the terminal needs a fee before the dip test. Is that normal?

Not at CorEnergy. We never charge a prospective buyer to dip, inspect or reserve a tank. Inspection access is arranged through our verified storage customer under its signed Tank Storage Agreement. Any request for such a fee in our name is fraud.

I received a TSR on CorEnergy letterhead. How do I know if it is real?

A genuine receipt is issued only to a verified customer under a signed Tank Storage Agreement, and its holder can see the allocation in the buyer portal. If you did not receive it through that process, follow the verification steps on this page before you act on it.

How do I report a fraudulent document that uses your name?

Email it to info@corenergylogistics.com, with the full email headers if you can, or call +1 252 633 7061. Tell us how it reached you and whether any money has been paid. If you have paid, contact your bank first.
