Saldanha Bay, South Africa
Deep-water crude storage on the Cape route. We arrange tankage, blending and VLCC freight at Saldanha Bay's commercial and strategic terminals.

Saldanha Bay is one of the few natural deep-water harbours on Africa's Atlantic coast, and it lies beside the route tankers take around the Cape of Good Hope. It hosts South Africa's strategic crude storage and a commercial terminal where traders store and blend crude.
The Strategic Fuel Fund leases spare tanks commercially, and traders use Saldanha for contango storage. We source tankage, plan blending, fix VLCC freight and appoint inspectors at the jetty.
Storage for traders and the state
The Strategic Fuel Fund, owned by the Central Energy Fund, built six large partly buried tanks at Saldanha. A commercial terminal next to it has nine tanks holding about 1.6 million cubic metres in its first phase, with room to grow, and offers blending. Cargoes are usually priced against Brent or Dubai.
Rules at the port
The Transnet National Ports Authority runs the port, and NERSA licenses storage facilities under the Petroleum Pipelines Act of 2003.
- Crude tankage in strategic or commercial terminals
- Crude blending to refinery specifications
- VLCC freight on the Cape route
- Independent inspection at the jetty
- Tracking from load port to Saldanha
