İzmit Bay on the Sea of Marmara is home to Tüpraş's İzmit refinery, the most complex in Türkiye. The gulf is one of the busiest in Europe, with 9,206 ship calls and about 84 million tonnes of cargo in 2025.

The İzmit refinery
The refinery has several piers, a platform pier and a dock, operating under the Kocaeli Region Port Authority. Marine operations follow Turkish pollution law, MARPOL and the IMDG Code.
